New PhD program “Environment and Society” at LMU Munich

Document Actions
This winter semester 2010/2011 Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich will launch its new PhD program “Environment and Society”. This program will be managed by the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, an international research center that is the result of the cooperation between LMU and the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

The PhD program will draw on the concentration of expertise in environmental research in Munich, both within the university and at a range of other institutions. A total of seven academic faculties – humanities, social sciences and natural sciences with an environmental focus – will participate in this systematically structured and research-based PhD program.

The program is designed for the duration of three years. It is aimed at graduates who plan to conduct doctoral research on a subject related to the nature/culture/society interface. The aim of the program is to provide students with an exciting research environment, comprising both disciplinary focus and an interdisciplinary approach and encouraging international networking. Students will develop skills in recognizing and analyzing complex natural, social, and historical processes, both in their inception and in their interrelationship with the wider world. To achieve these aims, the program draws on a range of subject areas both from within the university and from other research institutions.

This structured approach, offering opportunities for international dialogue and providing close supervision, offers the very best conditions for doctoral research and guarantees a high level of academic qualification.

New students can start this PhD program both in the summer and winter semesters. The deadline for applications to start in the winter semester 2010/2011 is August 1st (receipt of application).
