Organizers: Mona Bieling and the ESEH Next Generation Action Team
The ESEH NextGATe is organizing a teaching support program for junior instructors and anyone who would like to learn about some best practices in teaching Environmental History (and related fields). Our goal is to support junior instructors with the design and conduct of their courses and to create a community of early career peers who will support each other during the semester if any questions or issues arise.
The program consists of:
- two online workshops with experienced instructors who will share their insights. 1 ½ hours each, divided into an input (ca. 45 minutes) and a Q&A/exchange (45 minutes).
Workshop 1 on syllabus design: Prof. Marianna Dudley, Bristol University. Wednesday, 16 October, 16:00-17:30 CET.
- Best practices of course design, for example: How do I plan a course from beginning to end? How do I create and schedule assignments throughout the course? How broad / how narrow can a course be? What type of depth makes sense depending on the target group? How much reading can and should be assigned etc.
Workshop 2 on class design: Prof. Shen Hou, Peking University. Friday, 18 October, 16:00-17:30 CET.
- Best practices of running individual sessions, for example: What are some good tools to have in our toolbox as instructors? How do I match content with exercises? How much content fits into a session? Etc.
2. Mid-semester check-in (end of November)
3. Final meeting to share our experiences (mid-February 2025)
Goals of Program:
