New edition Exploring Environmental History Podcast: Donald Worster on environmental history
A new edition of the Exploring Environmental History Podcast is now available. This first of four special episodes explores the nature, methodology and future direction of environmental History.
The guest on the first episode of the series is Donald Worster. In the
interview he dissects his definition of environmental history and also
defines what it is not. He argues that environmental history causes a
paradigm shift in historical studies by introducing nature as an active
force in history. In terms of methodology Worster regards it as an
applied science that applies historical data to solving problems, e.g.
the management of natural resources. However, in order to grow and
develop further Worster thinks that it is important that the field
gains more institutional acceptance without being colonised by other
types of history. The challenge is to prevent isolating the subject by
