Berglund, Eeva, Knowing Nature, Knowing Science: An Ethnography of Environmental Activism, Cambridge: White Horse Press, 1998 Abstract: Abstract: The author focuses on three different groups of civil activists protesting against infrastructure installations, and on their understanding of science. The role of science is revealed as an ambivalent one for environmental activism. It is shown that this also poses problems for anthropology: in looking at environmental activism as a social commitment, meaningful commentary must combine both social and scientific perspectives. Abstract: In the early 1970s protests erupted against the policies of concentration and centralization in Sweden. Expressions of protest came in many different forms. Critics claimed that their was an systematic weakening and depopulation of the Swedish countryside, that environmental problems were growing, that society was squandering its valuable resources and that a culture of consumerism was emerging. This criticism of civilization, its character and meaning in the regional debate, is the topic of this dissertation. The dissertations interprets the green philosophy as a reaction to the tendencies making modern life to advanced, anonymous, or artificial. The alternative offered is a life more in harmony with nature, closer to earth. The main actor that are studied in the disseration is the Swedish Center Party (formerly Farmers Alliance) and their youth association (CUF). Their vision about a "Local society" proposed a comprehensive green solution to such problems as rural depopulation, urban growth, environmental degradation, and the increased gloval divide between rich and poor countries. Linder, P. and Östlund, L., 'Structural changes in three mid-boreal Swedish forest landscapes, 1885-1996', Biological Conservation, 1998 , 85(1-2), 9-19 pp. Abstract: Abstract: Changes in the structure and composition of 123 000 ha of boreal forests in Sweden, were analysed using historical sources. These forests had not been commercially logged when the first forest surveys took place in the late nineteenth century, so the earliest surveys provide unique data on structure of the natural boreal forest. Commercial exploitation in the late nineteenth century, subsequent intensive forest management and fire protection have generated a forest landscape dominated by relatively young and dense stands, totally different from the pre-exploitation forests. These fundamental changes have reduced the number of habitats for many red-listed species considerably. It is concluded that the essential characteristics of the natural forest landscape have to be re-created in order to restore and maintaine natural biodiversity. Keywords: forest history, old-growth forest, red-listed species

Lindmark, Magnus, 'Towards Environmental Historical National Accounts for Sweden: Methodological Considerations and Estimates for the 19th and 20th Centuries', Ph.D. University of Umea, 1998 Abstract: Abstract: New questions in a changing economy demands development of both contemporary and historical national accounts. One such question concerns economic and environmental relationships. From a national accounting perspective this issue has been approached in terms of environmental accounting. The aim of this study is to investigate how proposals for integrated environmental and economic accounting can be used for an extension of the Historical National Accounts for Sweden and for examining the long-term relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation and resource depletion. This issue is approached through methodogical considerations and estimates of iron ore and timber depletion and discharge of pollutants. The conclusions are that it is possible to construct environmental historical national accounts, but that the lack of historical data and theoretical difficulties cause a high level of abstraction and other problems concerning series. Keywords: historical national accounts, environmental history, iron ore

Lundgren, Lars J., Acid Rain on the Agenda: A Picture of a Chain of Events in Sweden, 1966-1968, Lund: Lund UP, 1998 Abstract: Abstract: This study investigates how acidification found its way on to the Swedish political agenda in 1967. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (established 1968) and its proposals for measures to deal with emissions of sulphur dioxide are studied in the first part, as well as the reactions to these proposals. The second part describes how the process from discovery to response was dealt with in the literature, followed by a description of the same sequence of events. The actual discovery and its acceptance are dealt with in several chapters. Section four is concerned with discovery in general, the relation between knowledge and response, the scope for preventing problems and tendencies to try and move problems somewhere else are discussed. Section five discuss some of the political, organisational and economic factors that contributed to acidification finding its way on to the political agenda. The development after 1968 are discussed in the final chapter. Keywords: acid rain, Sweden

Lundmark, Carina, 'Eco-democracy: A Green Challenge to Democratic Theory and Practise', Ph.D. Univ. of Umeå, Sweden, 1998 Abstract: Abstract: Ecocentrism, or green ideology, offers a perspective on the relationships between human beings and nature that is radically different from the human-centred outlook within which democratic decision-making procedures have developed. In this study the author seek to formulate a "green" democratic theory, with focus on three basic democratic values - liberty, equality and participation. The study shows that the eco-democratic norms have no exact equivalent within more traditional democratic theorising. The study also points to a rather propitious "breeding-ground" for the eco-democratic ideas among Swedish political actors at the beginning of the 1990s. Ecocentric interpretations of democratic core values have a position at political parties' agenda and there is a relatively widespread recognition of eco-democratic norms within the Swedish public. It is concluded that the elasticity of democratic core values can be seen as an aspect of contemporary Swedish democratic culture. Keywords: democratic theory, ecocentrism, environmental rights, environmental citizenship

Niklasson, Mats, 'Dendroecological Studies in Forest and Fire History', PhD. Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umea, 1998 Abstract: Abstract: Dendroecological methods were used to investigate past Saami use of forest resources and to reconstruct temporal and spatial aspects of fire disturbances including succesional patterns. The thesis consists of four studies: A reconstruction of seasonal and annual patterns in Saami use of innerbark for food from the early 1600s to 1870; A spatial reconstruction of fires back to 1300s, and wooden samples from stumps, dead trees and living trees with fire scars, collected in the landscape of Västerbotten count, were used; a study of the long-term influence of fires and fire intensity on the tree species composition in a mixed Pinus-Picea forest; an age determination of suppressed slowgrowing Norway spruce. It is concluded that tree-ring analysis can contribute with essential data to forest and fire history. Keywords: boreal, forest fires, dendrochronology

Östlund, L., Zackrisson O., and Strotz, H., 'Potash production in Northern Sweden', Environment and History, 1998 , 4(October), 345-358

Östlund, L., Zackrisson, O., and Strotz, H., 'Potash Production in Northern Sweden: History and Ecological Effects of a Pre-industrial Forest Exploitation', Environment and History , 1998 , 4(3), 345-358 pp. Abstract: Abstract: Potash (potassium carbonate) was one of the most important industrial chemicals in Europe prior to the twentieth century. In Sweden, potash was produced in the southern parts on a larger scale from the seventeenth century and production started in the northern Sweden in early nineteenth century, and ceased completely in the 1860s. The trees used was primarily birches. Previous research on the subject of Swedish potash production has concluded that the production ceased due to shortage of raw material. Through studies of historical records and experimental potash production we challenge these conclusions. In our opinion potash production in northern Sweden lost out to German producers who started to produce potash industrially at the same time that production in northern Sweden ceased. The removal of large old broadleaved trees was one important step in the large-scale transformation of the forest landscape which has influenced the structure and function of north Swedish forest ecosystems. Keywords: potash production, forest history

Paneth, N., Vinten-Johansen, P., Brody, H., and Rip, M., 'A Rivalry of Foulness: Official and Unofficial Investigations of the London cholera epidemic of 1854', American Journal of Public Health, 1998 , 88(October, nr 10), 1545-1553 pp. Abstract: Abstract: Contemporaneous with John Snow's famous study of the 1854 London Cholera epicemic were two other investigations: a local study of the Broad Street outbreak and an investigation of the entire epidemic, undertaken by England's General Board of Health. More than a quarter-century prior to Koch's description of Vibrio comma, a Board of Health investigator saw microscopic "vibriones" in the rice-water stools of cholera patients that, in his later life, he concluded had been cholera bacilli. All though this finding was potential evidence for Snow's view that cholera was due to a contagious and probably live agent transmited in the water supply, the Board of Health rejected Snow's conclusion. In this article the authors focus on the Board of Health investigations and the political environment that may have shaped its conclusions. They compare its scientific approach and mode of operation with that of John Snow, and they weigh the implications of these different approaches for contemporary epidemiology.
