Åkerberg, Sofia, 'Nature Simplified: The Illusion of Nature in Zoos', Nature Improved?: Interdisciplinary Essays on Humanity's Relationship with Nature, Umeå: Dept. of History of Science and Ideas, 1999 , 39-50 pp. Abstract: Abstract: This essay start by briefly tracing the historical outline of the zoological garden, before turning to one of the major shifts in the zoological gardens' attitudes toward animals, namely the introduction of Carl Hagenbeck's panorama in 1907. With Hagenbeck, the development of the zoo diverged into two directions - one striving to make xoological nature more panoramic (as proposed by Hagenbeck), and the other to enclose nature, to keep it more clearly restrained. Keywords: zoological garden, panorama, nature

Corell, Elisabeth, 'The Negiotiable Desert: Expert Knowledge in the Negotiations of the Convention to Combat Desertification', Ph.D. Linköping University, 1999 Abstract: Abstract: This disseration is a case study of the negotiations of an international agreement to mitigate dryland degradation, the 1994 UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Two non-state actors - International Panel of Experts on Desertification (IPED) and NGOs - are studied in regard to their levels of influence on the process and the outcome of the desertification negotiations. This study allows for an analysis of expertise and the role of non-state actors in international environmental negotiations in a North-South context. The study also provides a history of the international attempts at adressing desertification. Keywords: Convention to Combat Desertification, NGOs, environmental negotiations, politics

This paper explains why and how this has been achieved.

Dahlberg, Annika and Blaikie, Piers, 'Changes in Landscape or in Interpretation? Reflections Based on the Environmental and Socio-economic History of a village in NE Botswana', Environment and History, 1999 , 5(2), 127-174 pp. Abstract: Abstract: In semi-arid Africa, environmental change continues to be debated, focusing particularly on the status and significance of land degradation and on local versus scientific knowledge claims. This paper suggests an approach for using different types of data sources, and for bringing together understandings of ecosystem dynamics and of people's interaction with the environment, and thereby achieving 'closure' in a highly contested terrain. The environmental and socioeconomic history of a village in north-eastern Botswana is investigated using oral histories of villagers, aerial photographs (1964 and 1988), and official records. We found, instead of contradiction, a striking convergence between, on the one hand, recent scientific understanding of the unpredictability and complexity of semi-arid dynamics, on the other hand, the description and explanation of change offered by villagers themselves. Gillberg, Minna, 'From Green Image to Green Practice: Normative Action and self-regulation', Ph.D. Lund University, 1999 Abstract: Abstract: Ever since environmental issues appeared on the agenda of modern industrial society, the Swedish state has exerted itself to project a green image. In practice this image has merely functioned as a defence for the legitimacy of industrial development. The state has creacted environmental protection legislation which often has not had any influence on the companies' environmental practice, because the decision makers have generally given companies far too generous environmental terms. There has been a great discrepancy between green image and green practice. Gradually, however, a new outlook on environmental issues has emerged among industrial actors. Environmental organisations have exploited the market's own self-regulating mechanisms to bring about a change in industry's rationale and environmental practice. Scandals have also forced companies to see their need for internal control, with the aid of tools such as environmental management systems. Through a study of advanced practice in three strategically selected companies, this dissertation shows how self-regulation in environmental matters emerges with the aid of the environmental management systems ISO 14001 and EMAS. This self-regulation has involved a bottom-up and upward-moving development spiral of norm formation, which is based on the ethical delibiration and normative action of environmental consumers. Keywords: self-regulation, EMAS, ISO 14001, environmental protection act, Sweden, sustainability, environmental management system

The history of vegetation development and disturbance of two Picea-Cladina forests were detemined, to test the hypothesis that this forest has a natural origin. Several retrospective vegetation history and archaeological methods were used. The results suggests that the forests investigated are not the products of purely natural factors. Repeated anthropogenic use of fire, may have been used to create lichen-dominated areas, initially to attract game but later to improve winter grazing recources for reindeer. This finding contradicts the general view that Saami nomands did not use fire to alter forest vegetation. Keywords: fire, forest history

Abstract : The rise of Rotterdam in the 19th century as a main port for American oilshipments to Europe brought about a, at that time, much discussed pollution of water and soil. Controversies between traders, city-officials and civilians backed by chemical research caused a step by step banishment of the trade to the countryside surrounding the town. Mels, Tom, 'Wild Landscapes: The Cultural Nature of Swedish National Parks', Ph.D. Lund University, 1999 Abstract: Abstract: Since their emergence in the late nineteenth century, national park spaces have been perceived as articulations of untouched nature or wild landscapes beyond society. Yet no understanding of national parks can do without the recognition that they exist in historical spaces created, institutionalised and prepared for them by cultural practices and modes of representation. Rather than being given by nature, national parks are ensnared in the power-filled sites of absolut space, organic space and optical space. These socio-spatial issues are at the heart of this dissertation. The focus of the book is on reconstituting the process of how the natures and landscapes of Swedish national parks have been socially reinvented. It puts an emphasis on how the parks are communicated and authorised with the help of a multimedia dialectic of maps, images and texts, and various spatial strategies. On the Scientification of the Swedish Landscape in the 19th Century.
Abstract: This article discuss and prolematize a theory that says that the swedish dichotomy between cultural and natural landscapes during the late nineteenth century, is based on two separate discourses: the environmental and the antiquarian discourse. Two separate views on landscapes, through which the cultural and natural landscapes have been constructed and constituted during the last two centuries, and without any fundamental points in common between the two discourses. It is here argued that the scientification of the landscape in Sweden, at least in natural history, historical geology and archaeology, during the nineteenth century, should be looked upon as a cooperative enterprise among individuals associated with both discourses. That is, there were indeed points in common. Three cases are discussed: travelling as a scientific method, the methodological use of shorline displacement related to the glaciation theory, and finally, environmental and antiquarian discourses as parts of a more general discourse, Swedish nationalism. Nolin, Catharina, Till stadsbornas nytta och förlustande: Den offentliga parken i Sverige under 1800-talet, Stockholm: Byggförlaget, 1999 Abstract: English title: The Public Park in Sweden during the 19th century
Abstract: This dissertation studies the public parks in Sweden during the nineteenth century. A selection of the approximately one hundred public parks completed during the century are considered. Relaively few were laid out during the first half of the century, and most of the parks were laid out during the latter half. With this development Sweden was in step with the rest of Europe. During the first half of the nineteenth century the significance of the park as a meeting place and an aestetic element of the townscape was emphasised. The middle class was an important factor in their influence on the development of Swedish towns, both culturally and politically. The park was a place were families could spend their leisure time, meeting acquaintances and establishing new contacts. The public park also meshed well with ambitions to improve the lives of the workers, and was promoted as a more suitable social setting than the streets or the pubs of the town. Both hygienic and moral concerns thus contributed to the rise of public parks. The dissertation also deals with the training of gardeners and the wide range of Swedish gardening books published during the period. The literature formulated the ideals and design principles of the era. A range of styles more or less associated with various historical periods was presented. The styles most cited were French, English and German. The essential design assumption was that parks would be perceived as art rather then nature. A reaction against this began to be seen at the end of the century, and the new trend was to attempt to imitate nature as nearly as possible. Landscape features, be they mountains or rivers, man-made monuments or technological artefacts (roads, bridges, lighthouses etc.) have been reproduced socially and culturally through text genres, art forms, media, museums and schools, and through scientific description, particularly in the field sciences and the historical and museum sciences. Articulation of the territorium has also been carried out through social practices such as tourism. The result of these processes are symbolic and mental landscapes that are deeply embedded in the image and self-understanding of nations and regions. Examples are drawn mostly from the Nordic countries. Keywords: landscape studies, nationalism, regionalism

Abstract: This disseration is an ethnographic study of a risk organisation, a nuclear power plant. The branch concept, circumstances, defines situations 'beyond normal performance', which are to be reported to nuclear authorities. These circumstances are rarely endangering for men or material, but given the nature of nuclear power production, they have a potential to escalate to something larger. This disseration focuses on how the organisation deals with these issues and reproduces safety as something taken-for-granted. Through the narration of the various functions of the plant joined with theoretical discussions, different themes have been found describing how the organization deals with difficulties and how it reproduces its normal practice. Legitimization of the organisation was related to the plant's capacity to present an articulated rationality, while safety was in large produced by tacit knowledge.
