Abstract:
Hos is knowledge about nature created? And what do we do with this
knowledge? These issues are discussed in this book, through various
essays written by researches from the fields of history, economic
history and human ecology. The book is the result of an environmental
history symposium during autumn 1999 in honour of Linneaus travels in
Skåne (the most southern region in Sweden). The essays deals with, for
example, agricultural development, views on agricultural landscapes,
the preconditions for forestry and timber floating, and the history of
waste management. Keywords: environmental history, Sweden

First the influence of grazing and burning on forest density and structure in the nineteenth century landscape were analyzed. Then, the development of the landscape during the twentieth century, together with the impact of modern forest management methods on forest structure, were analyzed using historical sources. Todays young dense forests will result in higher timber values in the coming decades, but the forest has lost a range of ecological niches. Keywords: forest history, grazing, forest management

The author suggests a correlation between varieties of personhood, ways of engaging nature and ways of engaging other human beings through exchange. Whereas social socience research on negotiations of environmental policy tends to focus on their institutional, legal, economic or sociological aspects, the aim of the present project was to highlight their symbolic, experiential and ideological dimensions. The research team consisted of ten anthropologists and ethnologists from Sweden, Norway and Iceland. They have investigated a very diverse set of concerns, from the phenomenology of tourism, landscape conservation and environmental acitivism to the practical management of forests, fisheries and reindeer pastures. The chapter have that in common, that they all in one way or another deal with how cultural perceptions of nature are generated. The insect embodied the "invading alien", and assumed a cultural position that increasingly gained importance in imperial Germany. In this process, the minute insect, living invisible underground, was made visible and became constitutive of the scientific-technological object, "pest", pertaining to a scientific disciplin, modern economic entomology. The "pest" phylloxera emerged by being made visible in a way that enabled control measures against it. Thus, visibility functioned as a prerequisite for control measures. The author differentiate between social and physical visibility, as well as between social and physical control of the "introduced pest". The space of the insects visibility was not the vineyard as property of a vintner but the vineyard as national territory, where German (viti-) culture was defended against foreign infiltration and destruction. Fritz Haber, 'the father of chemical warfare', realized that Germany could not win the war and thus looked for 'civilian' uses for his chemical arsenal. Before the war, there was a rhetoric of dangerous 'masses' of insects but the large-scale techniques needed to deal with them had not been developed. The gap between rhetoric and practices enabled entomology to integrate chemical weapons into its working methods. Klintman, Mikael, 'Nature and the Social Sciences: Examples from the Electricity and Waste Sectors', Ph.D. Lund University, 2000 Abstract: Abstract: When society first perceived the environmental condition as problematic, focus was on local emissions with local consequences. Subsequently, the center of attention partly moved beyond local effect research to a broader interest in, for instance, ecocycle processes of energy, and steps from production to recycling of materials. However, technological and natural scientific analyses of these phenomena were not exhaustive. They left out more essential issues of how modern society works, of human lifestyles, and values. In the early 1970s, the social sciences and humanities began to be allocated more research hours to deal with environmental problems. Ever since, there have been debates as to the role the social sciences ought to play in the acquirement of knowledge about environmental issues. This study has two interrelated objectives. On is meta-theoretical and concerns the exploration of theoretical debates connected to issues of understanding environmental problems. The author claims that the holistic research interest in the actual environmental condition, as well as environmental problems, presupposes the ontological belief in a material world which exists regardless of our perception of it. The other objective is empirically/analytical, referring to the analyses of "green" public participation in the electricity and waste sectors in Sweden, and partly in the Netherlands and the UK. Abstract:
This study of the institutionalization and professionalization of
agricultural chemistry during the second half of the nineteenth century
analyses the relationship between chemical theories and social issues,
ideas and experience of recycling, the development of fertilizers, and
industrialization of agriculture. The study mainly takes a history of
science and environmental history perspective with focus on the Swedish
case. The dissertation also address the international context offering
a historical perspective of issues such as the relationship between
population and natural recources, the sustainability of society and
connections between science, technology and nature. During the second
half of the 19th century a national agricultural scientific
infrastructure was erected in Sweden, with experimental stations,
agricultural schools, local experimental fields and agrarian experts.
This network constituted a basis for agricultural science in society
and functioned as an important channel for the modernization of
agriculture and society. Agriculture become intertwined with science,
mining, industry and energy production and this created an
agroindustrial network, which was crucial for the development of
agriculture during the twentieth century. In this context, agricultural
science legitimized the development toward resource intensive farming
methods. Keywords: agriculture, agricultural chemistry, fertilizers, history of science, environmental history, recycling, nineteenth century

Moore, Jason W., 'Environmental Crises and the Metabolic Rift in World-Historical Perspective', Organization & Environment, 2000 , 13(2), 123-157 pp. Abstract:
Abstract: This article proposes a new theoretical framework to study
the dialectic of capital and nature over the long period of world
capitalism. The author proposes that the global ecological crisis of
today has its roots in the transition to capitalism during the 16th
century. The emergence of capitalism marked not only a decisive shift
in the arenas of politics, economy and society, but a fundamental
reorganization of world ecology, characterized by a "metabolic rift": A
progressively deepening rupture in the nutrient cycling between the
country and the city. Building upon the historical political economy of
Marx, Foster, Arrighi and Wallerstein, the author proposes a new
research agenda organized around the concept of systematic cycles of
agro-ecological transformation. This agenda claims at discerning the
ways in which capitalisms relationship to nature developed
discontinously over time as recurrent ecological crisis have formed
decisive moment of world capitalist crisis, forcing successive waves of
restructuring over long historical times.

English title: A Reserve Dilemma: The Kiruna National Park Proposal
1986-1989 and the Power over the Mountains as a Landscape for Leisure
Abstract:
This study adress different aspects of the conflicts that can occur in
relation to the question of establishing, or not establish, reserves,
especially national parks. Different perceptions of landuse (i.e.
conservation or tourism) is one reason for conflict, but these
perceptions also often collides with the interests of the local
society, and its use of the landscape for outdoor activities. One
particular case is studied, the proposal to establish a reserve in
Kiruna, in northern Sweden, a proposal that became a failure for its
initiators. Keywords: landscape use, conflicts, recreation, nature protection, Sweden, national parks
