Call: ESEH 2027 St Andrews Article Prize in European Environmental History

  • by

The ESEH welcomes submissions for the 2027 St Andrews Article Prize in European Environmental History

The prize rewards innovative and well-written article-length research in the field of European environmental history. Articles (or book chapters that are to be read as a stand-alone work) published in 2025 or 2026 are eligible. Online-first or ahead-of-print articles that will be published in 2027 will be eligible for the 2029 prize. The committee will consider articles on any subject in European environmental history, including transnational, imperial, colonial and postcolonial histories involving Europe, or Europe’s (post)colonial impact on the global environment.

Submissions will be evaluated for their originality, methodological contribution to environmental history, creative use of sources, and strength of argument. Applications may be submitted from anywhere in the world, in any European language. Among the selected finalists, preference for the winner will be given to junior scholars (defined as those within 8 years of the PhD).

The winner will receive a monetary award of €500, as well as a partial travel grant (if financial support is required) to attend the 14th ESEH Conference to be held in Salzburg, Austria on 7-10 September 2027. If an applicant requires financial assistance to travel to Salzburg, this should be specified in the application.

In line with the diversity of interdisciplinary environmental history, we accept both single- and multi-authored manuscripts. In case of the latter, applicants must notify all co-authors of the submission. Nominations are limited to one article per main author. However, you can appear as a second or third author on other submissions. You can nominate articles by other authors but only if the authors agree to the nomination. Please note that the financial award is a fixed amount, independently of the number of authors.

Deadline for submissions is 7 January 2027. Applicants are asked to submit their published article by email as a PDF to article.prize@eseh.org. If the language of publication is not English, applicants should include a one-page summary in English. The winner will be notified by 14 May 2027.
